Leigh-on-Sea is the western end of Southend, with dense residential streets between London Road (A13) and the estuary, shops with flats above along the Broadway and Leigh Road, and the old fishing quarter of Old Leigh below the railway. It has its own tip at Leigh Marshes, open to Southend residents only.
South Leigh was largely built in the Edwardian and inter-war years: terraces near the Broadway, and semi-detached and detached houses on the Marine, Highlands and Chalkwell Hall estates. North Leigh mixes terraces, semi-detached houses, bungalows and some council-built estates. Many properties have no off-street parking, and Southend's local plan names pressure on on-street spaces as a main issue. Four conservation areas apply: Leigh Old Town, Leigh, Leigh Cliff and Chapmanslord, a 1920s garden-city estate. Clearing a terraced house here usually means loading from the street.
Leigh Marshes Household Waste Recycling Centre accepts electricals. No booking, but it is for Southend-on-Sea residents only and a current driving licence or this year's council tax bill must be shown. Vans, pick-ups and other commercial-type vehicles are only admitted on Sundays between 12 noon and 4pm with a Household Waste Declaration Form (never with a trailer); hire vans can visit at any time with the hire agreement and proof of address. A small fridge in the back of the car is possible; a fridge-freezer or American-style unit usually isn't.
