From our yard
Grays is 30 minutes from our Wickford yard via the A132 south to the A13 at Pitsea, A13 west, then the A1089 and A1013 into Grays, so same-day wait and load and clearances are realistic when you book before 11am. Skips, skip bags and the grab come from the next working day. Item collections run on our Tuesday and Thursday rounds, booked by 4pm the working day before.
We cover
Grays town centre and High Street, Lakeside Shopping Centre, Chafford Hundred, Stifford Clays, Little Thurrock, Badgers Dene, Socketts Heath and Grays Beach Riverside Park
Access
Terraced streets around the town centre and station rely on on-street parking, so a skip there usually has to sit on the road under a Thurrock permit, while the estates at Stifford Clays, Chafford Hundred and Badgers Dene mostly have driveways or parking courts.

Grays at a glance

Homes

Central Grays is built around late-Victorian terraced streets, notably the Clarence Road quarter east of the High Street, where parking is on-street and falls within controlled parking zones. North of the centre, Stifford Clays is a council-built estate of the 1950s and 1960s, while Chafford Hundred, begun in the late 1980s on former chalk quarries, mixes houses with flats. High-rise blocks stand on Argent Street near the river. In the terraces, bulky items and garden waste usually have to come out through the house; in the flats, everything depends on lifts and stairs.

Building work

Renovation in Grays is concentrated in the older terraces around Clarence Road and the streets off London Road, which sit inside controlled parking zones, most operating Monday to Saturday, 9am to 6pm. Regeneration schemes include a pedestrian underpass beneath the railway at the High Street, the planned demolition and redevelopment of three eleven-storey blocks on the Blackshots estate, and new industrial units on the Titan site in Hogg Lane. Loft conversions and rear extensions are typical of the terraced stock, and a skip on the road has to be planned around permit bays.

Businesses

The High Street north of the railway, where a market trades, is pedestrianised, as is George Street, and bollards keep vehicles out, so collections from shops there and from the indoor Grays Shopping Centre have to be timed around the access restrictions. Estate agents, solicitors and independent shops line London Road, Orsett Road and Clarence Road, with more units in the Queensgate Centre. Industrial occupiers are found at the Globe Industrial Estate on Towers Road and off Hogg Lane. Waste typically runs from retail packaging and shop-refit debris to pallets, trade offcuts and office clear-outs.
