Chipping Ongar at a glance

Homes

Chipping Ongar's High Street is a conservation area with around 70 listed buildings, and at its narrowest the houses and shops stand very close to the carriageway. North of the centre, towards Shelley, a post-war council estate planned for about 450 houses was laid out between the Moreton and Epping roads, mostly two-storey homes with modest gardens. Marden Ash to the south and Greensted to the south-west are smaller settlements within the parish. High Street properties rarely have vehicle access at the front, whereas the estate houses are usually reached directly from the road.

Building work

The Local Plan allocates housing sites around Ongar, including land west of Ongar for about 99 homes, guided by a concept framework, and Bowes Field for about 135, and an application has also come forward on land at Fyfield Road. Renovation of listed buildings in the High Street conservation area requires consent, and the narrow stretch of the High Street leaves no room for a skip on the carriageway. Post-war houses towards Shelley are typical candidates for extensions and loft conversions. Off-street space near the centre exists at The Pleasance car park and around Bansons Lane.

Businesses

Ongar's shops, pubs and cafés are strung along the High Street, with a supermarket on Bansons Lane that opened in 1998. Office-based firms are found at the Essex Technology and Innovation Centre at The Gables on Fyfield Road, and the heritage Epping Ongar Railway brings visitors to Ongar station. Most businesses are small, producing cardboard, food waste and general refuse, with occasional shop-fit and office clear-out waste. The High Street is a widened market street that narrows sharply in places, so loading is easier from the wider central section.
