Halstead is a former weaving town on the River Colne with a steep High Street, Victorian terraces near the centre and newer estates on the edges; Bluebridge Industrial Estate sits on the Colchester Road side. The town has no recycling centre of its own, and the nearest tip is in Braintree, roughly 10 miles away by road.
Halstead's centre runs from Townsford Mill by the river up the High Street, inside a conservation area with more than 100 listed buildings. The Courtauld family's textile business shaped the housing: The Causeway has mill workers' houses of 1883, Factory Terrace was built for managers, and 1920s Arts and Crafts style homes stand along Hedingham Road, Colchester Road and Mallows Field. Newer estates off Oak Road have driveways, but many older terraces and cottages open close to the pavement, so furniture and garden waste usually leave through the front door.
Braintree Recycling Centre accepts electricals. Every visit must be booked in advance (Blue Badge holders, pedestrians and cyclists are exempt). Vans, pick-ups and large trailers are accepted with a separate van booking, and limited amounts of DIY waste from your own home are accepted. A small fridge in the back of the car is possible; a fridge-freezer or American-style unit usually isn't.
Terraced streets with resident parking are routine: the truck stops in the road for a few minutes while it's loaded.
