Barking has Victorian and Edwardian terraces around the town centre, large estates such as Gascoigne and Thames View, and a growing number of new flats at Barking Riverside. Industrial land runs along River Road and the River Roding, and the Jenkins Lane reuse and recycling centre sits just off the A13.
Victorian Barking was built as continuous terraces of two-storey houses with bay windows, small front enclosures and back yards, a pattern still found near the town centre. The Becontree Estate extends into the east of the town. Thames View, built in 1954-60 south of the A13, has about 2,000 homes in terraces, flats and maisonettes around Bastable Avenue. Barking Riverside, on former power station land, has permission for 10,800 homes. Terraces without side access, and flats reached by stairs or lifts, make carrying distance and parking the main practical points when clearing a home.
Jenkins Lane Reuse and Recycling Centre accepts electricals. Free for residents of Barking and Dagenham, Havering, Newham and Redbridge who show a current council tax bill or driving licence. Cars with ordinary household waste need no booking, but vans, trailers and any DIY or renovation waste must be booked in advance, and Luton vans, tippers, flatbeds and tail-lift vans are refused. A small fridge in the back of the car is possible; a fridge-freezer or American-style unit usually isn't.
In Barking we plan the stop before we arrive: controlled parking and red routes mean the truck can load but not wait, which is all a collection needs.
