Chipping Ongar's High Street is a conservation area with around 70 listed buildings, and at its narrowest the houses and shops stand very close to the carriageway. North of the centre, towards Shelley, a post-war council estate planned for about 450 houses was laid out between the Moreton and Epping roads, mostly two-storey homes with modest gardens. Marden Ash to the south and Greensted to the south-west are smaller settlements within the parish. High Street properties rarely have vehicle access at the front, whereas the estate houses are usually reached directly from the road.
