Mattress & Sofa in Stanford-le-Hope: what to know
Stanford-le-Hope is a commuter town between the A13 and the Thames, with a small centre around St Margaret's Church and a wide spread of 20th-century houses and bungalows, including The Homesteads to the north. Thurrock's only household tip, at Linford, is a short drive away and the London Gateway port lies to the south-east.
Stanford-le-Hope combines several generations of housing. The Homesteads, north-east of the centre, began in the 1890s as smallholdings and bungalows around Branksome Avenue, and many original plots were later redeveloped at higher density. Between Corringham Road and Billet Lane, an estate of about 100 houses, including Burgess Avenue, Adams Road and Conrad Road, was started around 1926. Streets near the station, including Butts Road, Rectory Road and King Street, lie in weekday permit parking areas. Access for removing bulky items varies plot by plot, and near the station the permit hours need allowing for.
For units on trading estates, tell us your opening hours, loading-bay arrangements and when waste can be collected. Dismantling a sofa or bed that won't come out in one piece is £30 an item.
- Charge
- £44.00 for either 1 item, 2 items or 3 items; a further £12.00 for each item in addition to the first 3; up to 8 items per booking.
- Leave items
- Left externally at the place where wheeled bins are usually collected, by 6am on the booked day; items left in a shared bin area must be labelled 'Bulky Waste' with the property number.
- Not taken
- No tonne or hippo bags; no commercial or business items (including commercial fridges and freezers); loose waste such as rubble or foliage must be bagged securely.

- Rules
- No booking is needed, but the site is for Thurrock residents only and proof of address is required; trade waste is refused. Small vans and single-axle trailers under 1.8m need a council permit (6 visits a year, or 2 for a hired vehicle), trailers are only admitted on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and larger vehicles such as Ford Transits, Luton vans, tippers, flatbeds and minibuses are not allowed in. Alternative: Linford is the only household waste site in Thurrock. Essex County Council centres such as Pitsea are restricted to residents of the Essex County Council area, so Thurrock households cannot use them.
